Stellar year has Fox eager for honours at ISPS Handa New Zealand Open

Off the back of a stellar first year on the European Tour, Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox has confirmed his entry for the 2018 ISPS Handa New Zealand Open in Queenstown.

Fox, who was fifth best rookie on the European Tour with total earnings of NZ$1.9m this year, said he wants his name etched on the Brodie Breeze Trophy at the 99th ISPS Handa New Zealand Open at the Millbrook Resort and The Hills on 1-4 March.

The 30 year old has spurned a European Tour event in favour of his home country’s Open Championship with no regrets.

“As a Kiwi it is the fifth major for us,” said Fox. “My career would not be complete without winning a New Zealand Open. All the best Kiwi players over the years have this on their resume. I would like to join those guys at some point.”

Fox is on a well-earned break after an exhausting 31-tournament schedule this year to many points on the globe. While he has learned much, he would not trade anything for his remarkable first year on the European Tour.

“To play the final series, play in two majors and a WCG event in my first year on the European Tour is something I wouldn’t have dreamed of at the start of the year. I am very happy with how it turned out.”

He had modest goals stepping into unchartered waters in 2017, just wanting to retain his full playing rights for 2018. The highlight was his three-week run where he placed sixth in the French Open and a share of fourth at the Irish and Scottish Opens.

“I finally put it together at the French Open and from that point it took the pressure off the rest of the year. I played well at the Irish and Scottish where I gave myself an outside chance and felt pretty comfortable.

“I probably played a little too much golf. We play a lot all over the world and I’ve done a lot of travelling and the body and mind have felt that in the back end of the year. I will learn from that.

“I’ve not sat back to reset my goals but the biggest goal now would be to win.”

He hopes that can be at the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open in March, after finishing in a share of sixth place in 2017 and 2014 and T11 in 2016.

Organisers expect to announce further key players in the coming weeks with tickets for the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open now on sale. Anyone who buys a ticket before 6 February will go into a draw for the Ultimate Fan Inside-The-Ropes experience.  On the final day the winner and a friend will walk with the leading Kiwi pro inside the ropes. They will also win a tournament shirt and cap, plus two tickets to the VIP Champions Lounge on the first three days.
